Today marks the 35th anniversary of the Constitutional Declaration of July 2, 1990—an historic act that laid the legal and political foundations of Kosovo’s statehood, RKS News reports.
To honor this pivotal event, three major political parties—LDK, PDK, and AAK—issued statements commemorating the day that marked a key milestone in Kosovo’s journey toward independence.
The Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK) stated that the courageous act of July 2nd, which defied the oppressive regime and gave voice to the long-standing aspiration for freedom, became the starting point of a new path for Kosovo—toward full independence, democracy, and Euro-Atlantic integration.
“The all-popular movement in Kosovo, led by the historic President Dr. Ibrahim Rugova, united the people around this cause, established the legal and institutional foundations of statehood, and gained the support of the democratic world. These efforts were followed by the people’s liberation war and NATO’s decisive intervention, which ultimately brought freedom to Kosovo.”
“The July 2nd Declaration remains an unshakable cornerstone in the building of our state—a turning point in modern Kosovo history and a clear testament to our aspiration to become part of the Euro-Atlantic family, integrated into NATO, the European Union, and in lasting friendship with the United States of America.”
The Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK) also marked the 35th anniversary of the Constitutional Declaration, calling it one of the most important and historic moments in the political journey of the people toward freedom and statehood.
In a Facebook post, PDK highlighted that the juridical-political act boldly expressed the collective will for statehood, rooted in the universal principles of equality, freedom, and democracy.
“This declaration, based on universal principles of equality, freedom, and democracy, preceded the drafting of the Kaçanik Constitution and marked an important beginning for the state-building and institutional development of the Republic of Kosovo. Respect and gratitude go to the delegates who, with courage and political maturity, proclaimed Kosovo an independent and equal entity among the republics of the former Yugoslavia—despite the difficult circumstances and the presence of Serbian police forces that had surrounded the Assembly building where this historic event was taking place.”
Ramush Haradinaj, leader of the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo (AAK), also commemorated the 35th anniversary, calling it the moment when the foundations of the Republic of Kosovo were laid.
In a Facebook post, Haradinaj recalled:
“Even surrounded by the barrels of the former Yugoslav regime, the Albanian delegates acted with courage and vision to demand the most legitimate of rights: the right to exist and to be equal.”
“The beginnings of the Republic of Kosovo stem from the Constitutional Declaration of July 2. These were the first sparks showing that Kosovo had no other path but independence. Today, with honor and pride, we remember that brilliant cast of individuals who did not hesitate to sign that declaration under extremely tense circumstances. Gratitude to all generations from all Albanian lands who had the courage to stand for Kosovo.”
