Danela Arsovska, the Mayor of Skopje, has been granted 24-hour police protection by North Macedonia’s Ministry of Internal Affairs, following a physical assault she experienced yesterday.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs confirmed the decision, stating: “The Ministry of Internal Affairs informs the public that following yesterday’s incident in Čair municipality, based on operational information and a security assessment prepared by the National Security Agency, a decision has been made to introduce 24-hour security measures for the Mayor of the City of Skopje, Ms. Danela Arsovska.”

In response to the attack, the Public Prosecutor’s Office “Skopje” today initiated proceedings against two individuals for the criminal offense of “violence.”

According to the prosecutor’s statement, the primary suspect yesterday threatened and physically assaulted the Mayor. The incident occurred when Mayor Arsovska, accompanied by city officials, was conducting an extraordinary inspection of an illegally constructed building on “Sevastopoljska” street. The suspect, identifying himself as the building’s owner, reportedly began to verbally abuse and threaten her before physically attacking her.

When other city employees and Ministry of Internal Affairs officers intervened to remove the first suspect, the second suspect allegedly continued to issue threats. “Through the act of violence, the two suspects created a sense of insecurity, endangerment, and fear in the public and among other present individuals,” the Skopje prosecutor’s statement read.
