German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has welcomed U.S. President Donald Trump’s plan to provide Ukraine with large-scale military support, including advanced air defense systems.
“President Trump and I have discussed this several times in recent days. I assured him: Germany will play an active role,” Merz wrote on the platform X (formerly Twitter).
Trump announced plans to send Patriot air defense systems to Ukraine to help Kyiv defend itself against Russian attacks. According to the plan, the cost will be covered by the European Union.
Previously, Merz expressed Germany’s readiness to purchase Patriot systems from the United States on behalf of Ukraine. Reports suggest that two such systems are being considered, with a third to be financed by Norway. Ukraine has stated it needs at least ten Patriot systems to secure its airspace.
“We are doing this in our own interest,” Merz emphasized.
“This will help Ukrainians protect themselves from the terror of Russian bombardments. Only this way can pressure be increased on Moscow to engage in peace negotiations. Ultimately, we are showing unity as partners in security policy,” he added.
Merz confirmed that the German government is coordinating closely with international partners and working out final logistical, technical, and financial details.
German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, who is currently in Washington for talks on the matter, met with U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth. Pistorius confirmed that preparations are underway for the delivery of two Patriot systems to Ukraine, to be funded by Germany.
He also stressed that Ukraine is in urgent need of additional air defense systems.
