The European Union has officially adopted a new and unprecedented package of sanctions against Russia, described by EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas as “one of the most powerful sanctions packages against Russia to date.”
“We remain steadfast. The EU has just approved one of the strongest sanctions packages yet. We are further cutting the Kremlin’s war budget by targeting 105 shadow fleet ships, their collaborators, and further restricting Russian banks’ access to financing,” Kallas announced on X.
Key highlights of the new sanctions package include:
Ban on the Nord Stream pipelines
Lower cap on Russian oil prices
Increased pressure on Russia’s military-industrial complex
Sanctions on Chinese banks facilitating sanctions evasion
Blockade of technology exports used in drones
The approval of this comprehensive package comes shortly after a previous attempt failed due to disagreements with Slovakia just three days ago.
This move reflects the EU’s intensified efforts to limit Russia’s economic and military capacity, particularly in light of the ongoing war in Ukraine and rising concerns about broader regional security.
