The French newspaper Le Monde reports that Serbia’s protest movement is turning violent due to government provocations. The publication accuses President Aleksandar Vučić of deploying hooligans to the streets to confront demonstrators protesting against corruption, a movement that has been active for nine months.
The Parisian daily states that the protest movement, which was previously peaceful for a long time, is “beginning to take on some forms of violence” after being attacked by hooligans that the authorities sent to the streets to deal with those who are not supporters of the regime.”
According to the report, on August 14, thousands of protesters “damaged several premises of Vučić’s political party, the SNS, in Novi Sad.” In response, Vučić condemned the actions and hinted at a possible introduction of a state of emergency. He also accused the protesters of trying to “burn his supporters alive” during the clashes.
The article highlights a growing and volatile political environment in Serbia.
