A tragic incident struck Russia on Friday night in the Ryazan region, where a massive explosion at a factory claimed the lives of at least 11 people and left 130 others injured, according to the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations.
Rescue teams continued operations on Saturday, searching through the rubble in hopes of finding survivors or recovering more victims.
Ryazan governor Pavel Malkov stated that the disaster began with a fire inside one of the factory’s workshops. However, the exact cause of the blaze remains unclear, and authorities have not disclosed what the factory was producing.
Emergency sources told RIA Novosti that safety violations may have triggered the tragedy. Meanwhile, some Russian media outlets speculated that gunpowder might have been stored at the site, potentially fueling the explosion.
In honor of the victims, local authorities have declared a day of mourning across the region.
