Deputies of the Assembly of Kosovo will gather today at 11:00 AM for yet another attempt to constitute the ninth legislature, following repeated failures to elect the Speaker of Parliament.
Despite a new ruling by the Constitutional Court, which obliges deputies to fully constitute the Assembly within 30 days, the largest party, Vetëvendosje (VV), has not yet succeeded in securing the required votes for its candidates.
During the first attempt, Albulena Haxhiu was nominated for Speaker but received only 57 votes. After her failure, VV proposed Donika Gërvalla, who secured 56 votes, while deputy Shqipe Selimi abstained from the process.
Selimi cited past controversies, pointing to two Facebook posts from 2020 in which Gërvalla accused her husband, Rexhep Selimi, of ties to organized crime.
On Friday’s session, VV put forward acting Finance Minister Hekuran Murati, but he too fell short, receiving just 57 votes.
Today’s session is seen as a crucial test for Kosovo’s political stability, as the country faces mounting domestic and international pressure to form a functioning parliament.
