Ukrainian drones targeted the Leningrad region and the city of St. Petersburg on Saturday, marking one of the deepest aerial attacks inside Russian territory since the war began.
As a result of the threat, Pulkovo International Airport temporarily suspended operations, causing dozens of flight delays. Local authorities also warned of possible mobile internet slowdowns across parts of the city.
Leningrad Governor Alexander Drozdenko confirmed that one drone was shot down in the Tosno district, followed by reports of three additional drones neutralized in the same area, along with others intercepted near Kirishi and Gatchina.
He urged residents to avoid industrial and public areas due to the ongoing aerial threat, adding that all security services remain on high alert.
Meanwhile, St. Petersburg Governor Alexander Beglov reported that a drone was downed in the Pushkino district, away from residential buildings, and later confirmed that another had been destroyed in the Krasnoselsky district.
So far, there have been no reports of casualties or major damage. Russian authorities have launched an investigation into how the drones managed to penetrate air defenses and reach such critical areas.
