The United Kingdom, France, and Germany are preparing to reimpose UN-backed sanctions on Iran, due to growing concerns that Tehran is developing nuclear weapons.

Known as the E3 group, these European states are activating the “snapback” mechanism after diplomatic efforts to restart talks on Iran’s nuclear program have stalled.

While Iran insists that its nuclear program is solely for peaceful purposes, it has enriched uranium to levels that exceed those required for civilian nuclear energy production.

This development is seen as a violation of the 2015 nuclear agreement, under which a range of international sanctions on Iran were suspended, Sky News reports.

In response, the E3 is seeking to reinstate previous sanctions, which include freezing Iranian assets abroad, banning arms deals with Tehran, and penalizing any activities linked to the development of ballistic missiles. These measures aim to exert further pressure on Iran’s already fragile economy.
