A tragic accident in Trieste has claimed the life of 25-year-old researcher Marta Giannelli, who was fatally struck by a car on Friday evening while crossing Via Fabio Severo, a well-lit street near the university campus.

Giannelli, originally from Melzo in Milan province, had recently moved to Trieste after winning a competitive research fellowship. She was a promising scientist in the field of chemistry, working at the Department of Chemical and Pharmaceutical Sciences under the supervision of Professor Barbara Milani.

According to eyewitnesses, a Jeep vehicle hit Giannelli at high speed without braking, throwing her several meters before crashing into the central barrier. The driver, identified as a municipal employee of Trieste, tested negative for alcohol consumption.

Emergency responders and a doctor who happened to be nearby provided immediate assistance, but despite all efforts, Giannelli succumbed to her injuries.

Her mentor, Professor Milani, expressed profound grief:
“Marta was an extraordinary young woman, full of passion and ideas. She was talented in the laboratory, full of initiative, and excited about her future abroad. To lose her at 25 is unacceptable.”

Giannelli had completed her degree in Chemistry at the University of Milan in February 2024 and was at the start of a promising academic career.
