Qatar is hosting a high-level summit of Arab and Islamic nations to address Israel’s recent attack on Hamas leaders in Doha. The meeting aims to explore ways to restrain Israel’s military actions as the ongoing war in Gaza continues.

The strike in Doha targeted a compound housing Hamas’ political leadership, raising concerns over Qatar’s role as a mediator in ceasefire negotiations. Despite the attack, Doha insists it will continue facilitating talks between Israel and Hamas.

Since Hamas’ October 7, 2023, assault on Israel, the conflict has expanded, with Israel carrying out strikes across Gaza, Iran, Lebanon, Syria, Qatar, and Yemen. Over 64,000 Palestinians have been killed, fueling anger in the region and raising questions about U.S. security guarantees in the Gulf.

Qatar’s Prime Minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, condemned Israel, calling for the international community to hold Israel accountable. However, the summit’s potential impact is uncertain, as some participating nations already maintain diplomatic ties with Israel and may hesitate to take strong actions.

Iran, which previously attacked Qatar’s Al Udeid Air Base in June, sent President Masoud Pezeshkian to the summit. Iran’s officials reiterated support for Qatar and other Muslim nations affected by Israel’s actions.

Qatar has long served as a key intermediary between Israel and Hamas, hosting the militant group’s political leadership at U.S. request. Recent criticism from hardliners in Netanyahu’s government underscores the tension surrounding Qatar’s role.

U.S. officials, including former President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, expressed support for Qatar and highlighted concerns over the strike.

Meanwhile, Israel faces domestic pressure over the 48 remaining hostages in Gaza, with ongoing offensives resulting in heavy Palestinian casualties, including women and children.
