UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres held talks with Syrian President Ahmed al Sharaa regarding the ongoing political transition in Syria, according to a statement from Guterres’ office.

Guterres stressed the need for inclusive dialogue and broad participation to advance the transition process. He also highlighted the importance of promoting Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and expressed concern over violations of the 1974 Disengagement Agreement.

The two leaders explored ways to enhance cooperation between the UN and Syria and exchanged views on broader developments in the Middle East.

President Ahmed al Sharaa became the first Syrian head of state to address the UN General Assembly since 1967, following the departure of Bashar al-Assad to Russia last December, which ended nearly 60 years of Baath Party rule. Al Sharaa’s transitional government was established in January 2025.
