The Kosovo Police organized a ceremony for the destruction of small and light illegal firearms in the village of Prelez along the Prishtina–Ferizaj highway.

The event was attended by the General Director of the Kosovo Police, Gazmend Hoxha, the UNDP Permanent Representative in Kosovo, Nuno Queirós, representatives from the EU Office, partner country embassies, and high-level institutional officials.

General Director Gazmend Hoxha stated that since 1999, over 36,000 weapons have been confiscated. From 2005 to the present, 15,904 short and long firearms, along with thousands of ammunition rounds, have been destroyed.

“This is an ongoing process aimed at creating greater security for our citizens. Illegal weapons are a danger to our society, to our families, and to our children. They do not provide safety—they create insecurity. Over the years, illegal weapons have been used in criminal cases, resulting in the loss of many lives,” said Hoxha.

He urged citizens to stay away from illegal weapons and encouraged those interested in legally owning firearms to apply for licensing according to the legal framework set by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Government of Kosovo.

“Since 1999, Kosovo Police have confiscated approximately 36,036 weapons. From 2005 to today, 15,904 short and long firearms, as well as thousands of rounds of ammunition—235,000 pieces in total—have been destroyed through this process,” Hoxha added, emphasizing the importance of the initiative for public safety.
