Kosovo’s Agency for Information and Privacy (AIP) has issued a public call urging media outlets to respect the privacy and dignity of citizens after the release of sensitive footage related to a tragic traffic accident in Peja that claimed the life of a local resident.
In a statement shared on Facebook, the Agency expressed concern that some media had broadcast images of the accident and the emotional reactions of family members, describing such content as a violation of the right to privacy, human dignity, and core principles of journalistic ethics.
“The Agency for Information and Privacy reminds that being a public figure does not strip anyone of their right to privacy, especially during moments of personal and family grief. The publication of sensitive footage without the family’s consent represents a serious violation of human rights and of legislation on the protection of personal data,” the statement read.
The AIP has called on all media outlets to:
- Immediately halt the publication and distribution of materials that infringe on the family’s privacy without consent.
- Remove existing content that contains images of the accident or footage of family members’ reactions shared without approval.
The Agency emphasized that privacy and dignity must be respected, particularly in moments of deep sorrow.
The appeal comes after several media platforms circulated footage showing grieving relatives’ reactions to the fatal accident in Peja.
