German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated after the European Political Community Summit in Copenhagen that EU leaders are highly determined to assist Ukraine by using frozen Russian assets.

Leaders discussed intensively the potential use of these assets to continue financing Ukraine’s defense, according to reports from The Guardian.

Next Steps for the EU

Merz said:
We will carefully examine this and it is very likely that a concrete decision will be made at the next European Council in three weeks.” He emphasized his support for any mechanism that allows the use of frozen Russian assets to help end the war in Ukraine.

He also highlighted a strong consensus within the EU on this option and warned that Russian President Vladimir Putin should not underestimate the EU’s determination.

Russian Response

Earlier, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova condemned the EU’s plans as criminal, stating that participants in such measures would face consequences. She described any actions that alter the legal status of Russian property as arbitrary expropriation, calling it “theft”.
