During a meeting in Tirana, President of Albania, Bajram Begaj, and President of Latvia, Edgars Rinkevics, described recent Russian drone incursions into NATO airspace as a form of hybrid and psychological warfare aimed at testing the Alliance and diverting attention from supporting Ukraine.
In a joint press conference, President Rinkevics emphasized that these provocations are meant to weaken NATO’s resolve and reduce support for Kyiv. He acknowledged that NATO has responded appropriately so far, but warned that continued provocations might require even stronger measures.
“Russia is intensifying a hybrid war to test NATO, create public concern, and reduce support for Ukraine. These provocations demand advanced aerial missions, anti-drone systems, and a clear message to Russia that stronger responses are possible if this continues,” Rinkevics said.
President Begaj highlighted that these actions represent a growing threat to Euro-Atlantic security, noting that NATO has responded with strategic maturity, unity, and strength. He stressed Albania’s contribution to the Alliance, including troop deployments in the Eastern flank, and announced plans to increase defense spending, modernize the army, and enhance air, land, and naval capabilities.
Discussions also covered the Albanian NATO mission in Latvia, with Rinkevics stressing that it strengthens security on the Eastern flank and underscores the need for vigilance in times of fragile peace and security.
“We appreciate Albania’s support for Ukraine and its contributions to collective defense. NATO’s airspace provocations show the importance of vigilance. Our KFOR troops will continue their mission, and we will discuss extending it until December 2027,” Rinkevics added.
