Acting Prime Minister Albin Kurti and Acting Minister of Economy Artane Rizvanolli visited the “Kosova B” power plant, marking the completion of rehabilitation and modernization works on Unit B2.
Kurti stated that the modernization of this production unit “guarantees long-term stability of electricity supply for the entire country.” He added that the production capacity has increased by 35 megawatt-hours, making the system more efficient, stable, and secure.
“Today we mark the successful completion of one of the most important projects of the Kosovo Energy Corporation (KEK) since its construction — the modernization of Unit B2, which guarantees long-term energy supply stability for the whole country. This is a great success for KEK and our workers,” Kurti said.
The acting Prime Minister emphasized that the modernization project has extended the unit’s lifespan by around 20 years and reduced maintenance cycles from 6 to 9 years, saving millions of euros in maintenance costs.
“System efficiency has improved significantly thanks to new technology and the modernization of the turbine, which now guarantees higher production with lower internal energy consumption. Coal consumption has dropped from 1.3 tons to 1.15 tons per megawatt-hour, showing a major improvement in energy conversion and reduced pollution,” Kurti noted.
Minister Rizvanolli added that similar investments are planned for Unit B1 next year. She explained that while production at KEK decreased in recent months due to ongoing works, these short-term sacrifices will bring long-term benefits.
“This is the first major investment in over 40 years since Kosova B started operating. Thanks to this modernization, production capacity has increased by 35 megawatts, reliability has improved, and the need for long-term shutdowns has decreased. Our energy security is now stronger — we will import less and export more,” Rizvanolli said.
She noted that in just the first five days of reoperation, KEK managed to generate €2 million in electricity exports, reflecting the immediate positive impact of the project.
