Politico has reported that Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić accused Turkey of destabilizing the Western Balkans and violating international law following Ankara’s supply of weapons to Kosovo.

“I am horrified by Turkey’s behavior and its blatant violation of the UN Charter and Resolution 1244 of the UN Security Council, as well as by its continued arming of Kosovo,” Vučić wrote on social media on Wednesday.

He said it is now “completely clear that Turkey does not want stability in the Western Balkans and dreams of reviving the Ottoman Empire.”

“Serbia is a small country, but we have clearly understood the message,” Vučić stated.

According to Politico, relations between Belgrade and Ankara are complex, combining economic cooperation with historic and political tensions. Turkey remains one of Kosovo’s most steadfast allies and was among the first countries to recognize its independence in 2008.

Vučić’s accusations follow his earlier claims against Albania and Croatia, whom he accused of fueling an arms race in the region after signing a joint defense cooperation declaration with Kosovo in March.

While Ankara has yet to issue an official response, Turkish officials have previously defended their defense partnership with Kosovo, emphasizing its role in strengthening regional defense capacity.

In January 2024, Turkish Defense Minister Yaşar Güler and Kosovo’s Defense Minister Ejup Maqedonci signed a military framework agreement in Ankara, expanding cooperation on arms sales, training programs, and joint exercises.
