U.S. President Donald Trump stated that he would consider allowing Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to resume military operations in Gaza if Hamas fails to fully comply with the ceasefire agreement. Speaking to CNN, Trump said Israeli forces could return to the ground “the moment I say the word.”
“What’s happening with Hamas – that will be clarified very soon,” the president said briefly.
Israel has accused Hamas of violating the agreement by failing to return all hostages as stipulated. This has sparked internal criticism in Israel, where officials have announced that humanitarian aid deliveries to Gaza may be reduced or delayed.
According to Trump’s 20-point plan, all hostages were supposed to be returned within 72 hours of Israel’s acceptance of the agreement. As of Wednesday morning, 20 living hostages had been released, while Hamas handed over four bodies, one of which was later confirmed not to belong to a listed hostage. Another five bodies are expected to be returned soon.
In the aftermath, reports have emerged of violent clashes between Hamas and rival Palestinian factions, including what appear to be public executions.
Trump told CNN that, for now, Hamas “is cleaning up the gangs, the violent gangs.” When asked whether it was possible that Hamas was executing innocent Palestinians, Trump replied:
“I’m looking into it.”
Under the terms of the agreement, Hamas is required to disarm, with its members eligible for amnesty. When asked what would happen if Hamas refuses to disarm, Trump responded:
“Israel will be back on those streets the moment I say the word.”
