Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has confirmed that he apologized to U.S. President Donald Trump over a political advertisement aired by the province of Ontario opposing trade tariffs. Carney also revealed that he urged Ontario Premier Doug Ford not to broadcast the ad.
Carney made the statements to reporters following his participation in the Asia-Pacific Summit in South Korea, where he said the apology was delivered privately during a dinner hosted by the South Korean president as part of a meeting with Trump.
“I apologized to the President,” Carney said.
The controversial advertisement, commissioned by Doug Ford and broadcast by the Ontario provincial government, used excerpts from a speech by former U.S. President Ronald Reagan, in which Reagan warned that tariffs lead to trade wars and economic disaster, Reuters reported.
In response to the ad, President Trump announced an increase in tariffs on goods from Canada and suspended ongoing trade talks with the country.
