Athens has imposed a temporary ban on public gatherings in key areas of the Greek capital ahead of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s visit this Sunday, citing security concerns.

Zelenskyy is set to arrive in Athens on Sunday afternoon, where he is expected to hold meetings with Greek President Konstantinos Tasoulas and Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

The details of Zelenskyy’s schedule have not been disclosed, with Greek authorities emphasizing the need for discretion due to heightened security risks.

Energy Cooperation Expected to Top Agenda

Analysts suggest the main focus of Zelenskyy’s visit is energy cooperation. According to Ukrainian media, a potential agreement in the energy sector may be on the table, reflecting Ukraine’s ongoing search for strategic partnerships amid the war with Russia.

Athens has recently intensified its own energy development efforts, including:

  • The inauguration of the Komotini gas compression station, Greece’s first electrically driven and zero-emission facility capable of handling natural gas and hydrogen blends.
  • Accelerating the Great Sea Interconnector project, aimed at linking Greece and Cyprus to bolster energy independence and security in the region.

Public Gathering Ban Used as Security Measure

The Greek authorities have banned all public gatherings between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. on Sunday in central Athens, as well as in the districts of Filothei and Halandri.

The decision was made “due to serious threats to public safety,” officials stated, citing potential risks including “serious crimes against life and property” and possible disruption to socio-economic activity in affected areas.

This measure reflects the Greek government’s ongoing approach to foreign dignitary visits amid global tensions and regional instability.
