The United Nations Human Rights Committee of the General Assembly has approved its annual resolution reaffirming the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination, a move widely regarded as a significant diplomatic statement.

The resolution draws on findings from the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague, which concluded that the Israeli occupation of the West Bank is illegal and must end immediately.

The measure was adopted with an overwhelming majority, receiving 164 votes in favor, while only seven countries opposed: the United States, Israel, Argentina, Paraguay, Micronesia, Nauru, and Papua New Guinea.

Supporters of the resolution highlight its importance as an international message supporting Palestinian self-determination and stressing the urgent need to end the occupation.

The resolution is expected to be further discussed in upcoming sessions of the General Assembly, where member states may debate its implementation and implications.
