The final phase of the security camera installation project in Kosovo’s capital has been completed, but Lulzim Fushtica, Director of the Directorate for Security and Emergency in Prishtina, announced that a major expansion of the system is planned for 2026.

He stated that the joint plan with the Kosovo Police foresees the installation of nearly 600 new cameras across 200 locations in Prishtina, according to Ekonomia Online.

Fushtica noted that so far, 165 cameras have been installed at 54 locations, emphasizing that this is just the beginning of a long-term project aimed at improving public safety in the capital. Investments will continue next year with a budget specifically allocated for this initiative.

“The first project phase for camera installation has been completed. To date, 165 cameras have been installed in 54 locations. This is only a small part of what we plan to achieve. Starting next year, 2026, we have budgeted to continue, and the joint plan by the capital’s Police and the Directorate for Security foresees nearly 600 cameras at 200 locations in the city,” Fushtica said.

He highlighted that the benefits of the system are direct and measurable in terms of public safety, traffic control, and crime detection.

“The main benefits are preventing incidents and increasing public safety in the capital. We are seeing an improvement in overall public safety, better traffic monitoring, and faster detection of cases. According to data from the city police, case detection has increased by up to 30%, and there has been a reduction or prevention of incidents by up to 30%. Detection rates for ‘hit-and-run’ cases have reached up to 100%, as cameras are installed at all entry and exit points, intersections, main squares, and primary roads. We plan to continue installing them throughout the city based on risk assessments,” he explained.

Fushtica clarified that the camera system is managed exclusively by the Kosovo Police, in accordance with current legislation.

“By law, only the Kosovo Police are authorized. The Directorate of the Capital’s Police manages the system, and we have installed a monitoring point in the city’s traffic sector, operational 24/7,” he added.
