Western allies of Ukraine have publicly criticized the proposed U.S. peace plan, warning that it could leave Ukraine vulnerable to further attacks.

In a joint statement issued during the G20 summit in South Africa, leaders from several key countries called for improvements to the proposal to ensure long-term stability and security for both Ukraine and Europe.

The declaration, signed by leaders from Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and others, emphasized that the current plan could undermine Ukraine’s security and destabilize the region.

While acknowledging that the proposal contains “essential elements for a just and lasting peace,” the leaders stressed that “additional work is needed,” particularly regarding concerns over border changes and restrictions on Ukraine’s military capabilities.

French President Emmanuel Macron underscored that any peace plan must ensure the security of the entire continent and cannot simply be a “U.S. proposal.”

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz added, “We are still quite far from a good outcome for all,” highlighting the need for broad consensus that protects Ukraine’s interests and guarantees continental stability.

The opposition from Western allies focuses on two main concerns: the risk of compromising Ukraine’s territorial integrity and limitations on its military capabilities, which could weaken its ability to defend itself.
