Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk stated on Thursday that the independence of Poland would be at risk if Ukraine were forced to capitulate.
Speaking to journalists during a EU leaders’ meeting in Brussels on the topic of funding for Ukraine, Tusk said that leaders are engaged in a “very difficult process” to reach an agreement, with some countries, notably Belgium, theoretically more exposed to potential Russian retaliation or financial measures.
He emphasized that Poland’s security is directly linked to Ukraine’s ability to resist aggression:
“Polish independence would be under threat if, due to weak decisions or lack of action from Europe, Ukraine were forced to surrender in the war.”
“I want this to be understood by everyone – not only our colleagues here in Europe, but also everyone in Poland. Supporting Ukraine with these Russian funds is crucial because Ukraine’s independence removes the risk of aggression or war from Polish borders. Conversely, Ukraine’s fall would represent a direct threat to Poland.”
