Dozens of miners from the second shift at the Trepça Mine were trapped for several hours hundreds of meters underground due to a power supply failure, while the trade union has confirmed that the situation has now been normalized and work has resumed.
The Head of the Trepça Workers’ Trade Union, Ibrahim Jonuzi, confirmed that the miners managed to exit the mine after the electricity outage.
“I can confirm that the miners were trapped, but they have now exited. It was caused by a power-related malfunction; I don’t have more details. They were trapped for about six or seven hours. Work is now resuming normally and the situation has returned to normal,” he said in a response to EO.
Earlier in the day, reports indicated that dozens of miners were unable to exit the mine after completing their second shift due to problems with the electricity supply. According to these reports, the miners were trapped in levels 10, 9, and 8, several hundred meters underground.
The miners were supposed to leave the mine several hours earlier, but the power outage prevented the normal operation of elevators and emergency exits.
This is not the first time such an incident has been reported. Just a few days ago, due to a similar electrical failure, several miners were also trapped hundreds of meters underground.
