Ryan Routh was sentenced on Wednesday to life imprisonment plus an additional seven years for attempting to assassinate former U.S. presidential candidate Donald Trump in 2024 at Trump’s golf club in West Palm Beach, Florida, according to Fox News.
The sentence follows Routh’s conviction in September on five federal charges, including attempted assassination of a major presidential candidate, assault on a federal officer, and multiple firearms-related offenses.
Federal prosecutors sought a life sentence for the 59-year-old defendant, while Routh’s attorney, Martin Roth, requested a reduced sentence consisting of 20 additional years in prison on top of the mandatory seven-year term linked to one of the firearms charges.
Routh’s sentencing hearing in Fort Pierce, Florida, had initially been scheduled for December but was postponed after U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon granted a delay. The decision came after Routh chose to be represented by legal counsel during the sentencing phase, rather than continuing to represent himself, as he had done for much of the trial.
