Torches were lit today near the memorial plaque installed at the New Pedestrian Bridge in Mitrovica to mark the 26th anniversary of the massacre that occurred during the night of February 3–4, 2000, when 10 Albanians were killed and 25 others were wounded.

The Mayor of South Mitrovica, Faton Peci, stated earlier in the day that 26 years ago, the “genocidal Milošević regime” killed and wounded innocent civilians solely because they were Albanian and were present on their own property.

According to him, the memorial plaque was installed as evidence that the sacrifice and the spilled blood of the victims will never be forgotten.

Among those attending the memorial ceremony was Luan Abrashi, whose mother, Sebiha Abrashi, was killed by Serbian structures during the massacre.

Abrashi recounted the horror of that night, emphasizing that the crime took place in the presence of KFOR and UNMIK forces, nearly six months after the end of the war.

“My mother, Sebiha Abrashi, was among the victims. That night was a night of terror, as it happened in the presence of KFOR and UNMIK forces, nearly six months after the end of the war. It was very well organized by Serbian structures as part of ethnic cleansing against Albanians. It was a horrific night, as the killings were carried out indiscriminately, without regard to gender or age, and in the most brutal manner,” Abrashi said.

Meanwhile, an exhibition featuring photographs from the “Night of Terror” was opened today at the “Rexhep Mitrovica” Cultural Center.
