Andy Burnham has taken a significant step toward becoming the leader of the Labour Party and, consequently, the next Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.

According to reported figures, 322 out of a total of 402 Labour MPs have backed his candidacy to replace Keir Starmer as party leader. Burnham needs just one more nomination to reach the minimum threshold of 323 supporters.

He is currently the only declared candidate for the position. If no other candidate enters the race, Burnham is expected to be announced as the new Labour leader next week and then assume the role of Prime Minister on July 20.

His political rise comes after returning to Parliament through a by-election in Makerfield, where he ran as a Labour representative.

Burnham thanked MPs for their support, stating that his candidacy represents a demand for a “new approach to politics.”

The developments come after a period of increased political pressure on Keir Starmer and internal discussions within the Labour Party regarding the future of its leadership.
