Another Labour Party minister, Zubir Ahmed, has resigned from the government led by United Kingdom Prime Minister Keir Starmer, citing a “lack of values-based leadership” as the reason for his departure.
Ahmed is the fourth minister to resign from Starmer’s cabinet following Labour’s poor results in the local elections.
Ahmed, who served as Minister for Innovation and Health Security, said he remains proud of his work in improving the National Health Service (NHS), despite stepping down.
“But as I lift my eyes above the day-to-day work of ministerial life, it is clear that despite the scale of individual achievements and progress, they are now being undermined and eroded by the absence of values-based leadership,” Ahmed wrote on X on Tuesday. “It is clear from recent days that the public across the United Kingdom has now irreversibly lost confidence in you as Prime Minister.”
He is the fourth minister to call on Starmer to resign, while more than 80 other MPs are reportedly seeking to open a leadership contest within the Labour Party.
Meanwhile, the BBC reported that more than 100 Labour MPs have signed a joint statement backing the British prime minister.
