Basel is on its way back to championship glory, and Xherdan Shaqiri is undoubtedly the hero of the season. With 14 goals and 17 assists so far, no other player comes close to these numbers after 33 rounds of the league.
His latest goal, followed by three assists, came today. Shaqiri scored Basel’s second goal and later set up three more, bringing the final score to a 5–0 win over Yverdon.
Now 33 years old, Shaqiri returned to Switzerland at the start of the season—a move that has proven to be the right one. Basel hasn’t won the league title in eight years, but this season they sit alone at the top of the table.
