To be elected Pope, a candidate must secure two-thirds of the votes from the cardinals, reports Rks News.

This did not happen tonight, as black smoke emerged from the Vatican, a sign that there was no positive result in the first voting round.

One round of voting took place tonight, and tomorrow, up to four rounds may be held each day.

The selection could take two to three days, depending on how quickly consensus is reached.

The Conclave always attracts great public attention due to the mystery and symbolism surrounding it.
