Gjergj Bojaxhi, co-leader of the “Rrënjet” project, which studies the genetic structure of the Albanian population, says that a recent study has identified descendants of Gjergj Kastrioti (Skanderbeg).

In an interview on the “Dekalog” program on Dritare TV, he stated that the study has identified tribes in the Dibra region of Albania that, according to him, belong to the Kastrioti lineage.

“We have found the Kastrioti line. It is an Albanian lineage. That is all I can tell you,” he initially said.

According to Bojaxhi, the results indicate that this is a “line of Illyrian origin,” which he described as “one of the most typical Illyrian lines.”

“We have found in Dibra tribes that belong to that lineage. It is an Albanian line, a line of Illyrian origin, and all those who have put forward theories… Fortunately, it is an Illyrian line, because if it had turned out to be a Slavic line, we would have reported it as Slavic, but fortunately it has turned out to be 100% Illyrian. It is one of the most typical Illyrian lines, and we also know where the core of this Illyrian group comes from, in terms of how it was formed. We have found other tribes in the Dibra area that belong to that lineage. We have found people who could be… if you go back in time and if Gjergj Kastrioti were alive in their time, they could have been, for example, third cousins of Gjergj, or of Gjergj or Gjon,” he said.
