The Central Election Commission of Kosovo has decided to conduct a recount of ballots from 185 regular polling stations as part of a verification process following Kosovo’s early parliamentary elections held on June 7, 2026.

According to KQZ spokesperson Valmir Elezi, the recount was approved during an electronic meeting of the Commission on Wednesday and is intended as an additional control measure to ensure the accuracy of the vote-counting process.

The 185 polling stations represent 7.41% of the total 2,498 regular polling stations where voting took place nationwide.

Why is the recount being conducted?

Elezi explained that the decision was taken in response to issues identified during the counting of candidate votes in some Municipal Counting Centers during the elections held in December of last year.

“This control measure has been undertaken by the KQZ to address problems identified in several Municipal Counting Centers during the counting of votes for parliamentary candidates in last year’s elections and aims to ensure that the counting process has been conducted accurately.”

Counting Process Completed

KQZ has completed the counting of all categories of ballots within 10 days of the election, including:

  • Regular ballots,
  • Postal votes from abroad,
  • Conditional votes,
  • Votes cast by persons with special needs.

Wednesday marked the completion of the final counting procedures.

Next Steps

Elezi stated that if no complaints are filed within the 48-hour legal deadline regarding the administration of the final counting process, the KQZ will proceed with the official announcement of the election results.

The recount is being presented as a verification measure rather than an indication of widespread irregularities, with the objective of strengthening confidence in the final results before certification.

Political Significance

The decision comes as Kosovo prepares for the formation of new institutions following the June 7 elections. Any changes resulting from the recount could affect candidate rankings and mandate allocations, although recounts of this scale typically do not significantly alter overall party results unless substantial discrepancies are discovered.
