Michal Koudelka, head of the Czech Security Information Service, said on Monday that Russia could resort to more dangerous operations in NATO member states supporting Ukraine within the coming months, as Moscow appears to be adopting an “escalate to de-escalate” strategy.

“This could include sabotage attacks on the territory of a NATO member state against a facility linked to aid for Ukraine, a drone or missile strike on a weapons depot intended for Ukraine, or, in an extreme case, even a limited military action against one of the neighbouring member states of the Alliance,” Koudelka said at a parliamentary security conference.

He stressed that the last scenario did not currently represent an imminent threat, as Russia has all its forces concentrated in Ukraine.

Koudelka, director-general of the Czech Security Information Service, said his agency had no specific information indicating a direct threat to the Czech Republic but was closely monitoring operations targeting the country and its allies.

He added that Russia’s hybrid activities were aimed at weakening unity within the NATO military alliance.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said earlier this month that Russia had no plans to attack any European country and wanted to coexist peacefully. Moscow has also repeatedly denied involvement in sabotage or hybrid warfare operations.
