President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has announced a sweeping legislative response to a wave of school violence that has shocked Turkey. In a series of statements following two horrific mass shootings, the President confirmed that the government will implement a total ban on social media for children under 15 and dramatically toughen firearm regulations.
A National Tragedy: The School Shootings
The push for reform follows two back-to-back tragedies that occurred last week, leaving the nation in mourning:
- Sanliurfa Incident: Last Tuesday, a 19-year-old former student opened fire at a high school, wounding 16 people before taking his own life.
- Kahramanmaraş Tragedy: Just one day later, a 14-year-old boy used his father’s weapon to kill eight students and a teacher before committing suicide at the scene.
Cracking Down on Illegal Arms
President Erdoğan emphasized that “unrestricted access to firearms” is a gap that must be closed immediately. The proposed changes to gun laws include:
- Owner Liability: Harsher criminal penalties for gun owners who allow minors access to their weapons.
- Strict Oversight: A total review of the licensing process and increased inspections for firearm storage.
The Social Media Ban: Protecting the Youth
