The European Union has warned of a strong response to the new tariffs that the U.S. administration, under President Donald Trump, is set to impose on European countries.
The European Commission reacted after Trump’s statement announcing that the U.S. would impose a 25% tariff on imports from the EU. “The EU will not stand idly by. We will protect European businesses, workers, and consumers from unjustified tariffs,” the European Commission said in its response, as reported by Reuters.
In a media statement, Trump confirmed that the tariffs would include cars and other European goods. “In general, the tariff will be 25%,” he said, also recalling the earlier decision to impose taxes on steel and aluminum imports from the EU.
The U.S. president accused the European Union of harming the U.S. with its trade policies. “The EU was created to harm the United States. They’ve done a good job so far, but now I am president,” Trump declared.
His decision has caused tensions between the U.S. and Europe, threatening economic relations between the two sides. According to the U.S. administration, the tariffs aim to equalize the taxes the EU imposes on American products.
