The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Diaspora of Kosovo (MPJD) has once again urged Kosovo citizens, including members of the diaspora traveling home for the summer holidays, to use alternative routes and avoid transiting through Serbia whenever possible.
The appeal comes as the holiday season has significantly increased the number of Kosovo diaspora members traveling through Serbia on their way to Kosovo. Just days ago, Serbian authorities arrested Osman Selmani on allegations related to alleged war crimes dating back to 1999.
Tens of thousands of Kosovo citizens pass through Serbian border crossings each year. In recent years, numerous incidents have been reported, most involving extended border checks and questioning by Serbian authorities.
Over the past two years alone, several arrests have also been reported, mainly linked to allegations concerning violations of the constitutional order of the Republic of Serbia.
Lawyer Arianit Koci has also called for caution when traveling through Serbia.
The Foreign Ministry emphasized that it has continuously advised Kosovo citizens, including those living abroad, to use alternative routes when traveling to Kosovo due to repeated cases of detentions and arrests of Kosovo citizens by Serbian authorities.
According to the ministry, through the Liaison Office of the Republic of Kosovo in Serbia, it monitors and handles every reported case submitted by citizens or their family members. The ministry has also regularly informed the European Union Delegation in Serbia and sent diplomatic notes to the missions of the Quint countries accredited in Serbia regarding these incidents.
The ministry reiterated its recommendation that travelers carefully consider alternative transit routes when planning their journey to Kosovo.
