High-ranking representatives from the European Union and the United States held a videoconference focusing on the all-inclusive tariffs announced by U.S. President Donald Trump for European imports, writes Rks News.

EU Trade Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič discussed for more than two hours with U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer.

In a post on the X platform, Šefčovič described the discussion as “honest.”

“I was clear, the U.S. tariffs are harmful and unjustified,” he emphasized.

Šefčovič added that the trade relationship between the EU and the U.S. requires a new approach, stressing the EU’s commitment to dialogue while also showing its readiness to protect its own interests.

“The EU-U.S. trade relationship needs a new approach. The EU is committed to meaningful negotiations but also prepared to protect our interests,” he said, concluding with the words: “We stay in touch.”

No further details from the meeting have been made public by either side.

President Trump announced on Wednesday a base tariff of 10% on imports from most countries, while the EU has been hit with a 20% tariff on its goods exported to the U.S.
