The United Kingdom’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has issued a sharp condemnation of the recent statements made by Serbian Minister Snežana Paunović regarding the “ethnic cleansing of Kosovo.”

British diplomatic officials warned that such inflammatory language directly threatens regional stability by actively reopening old historical divisions across the Western Balkans.

The UK Diplomatic Stance

In an official statement, a spokesperson for the UK Foreign Office characterized the remarks as entirely unacceptable for modern international discourse:

“We condemn the statements made by Serbian Minister Snežana Paunović, including references to the ethnic cleansing of Kosovo. They are completely abhorrent and have no place in today’s society.”

The FCDO underscored that at a time when Western Balkan nations are explicitly focused on establishing a peaceful, stable, and multi-ethnic future, these comments appear deliberately designed to stoke ethnic tensions and reverse diplomatic progress. The ministry concluded that responsible political leaders have a duty to reject such language clearly and unequivocally.

Belgrade’s Internal Fracture

The diplomatic backlash highlights an emerging political rift within Serbia’s leadership. The UK Foreign Office noted that it is actively monitoring the situation, including a public statement from Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić, who has moved to openly distance himself from Paunović’s remarks and issued a formal denial of her position.
