U.S. President Donald Trump has suggested renaming the state of New Mexico “New America,” sharing a video and message endorsing the idea without making clear whether the proposal is intended as a political statement or reflects any concrete plan.
Trump wrote that “many people” had suggested changing the name of New Mexico, which he described as one of the states with a history of what he called significant election cheating.
“So much more prestigious and beautiful for the people of that potentially incredible State. Wow, I Love It!!!” Trump wrote in the post.
The suggestion would remove “Mexico” from the state’s name and replace it with “America,” creating the proposed name “New America.”
The post comes amid Trump’s previous efforts to change the names of major geographic features.
On January 20, 2025, Trump signed an executive order directing the federal government to use “Gulf of America” instead of “Gulf of Mexico” in federal documents and communications, a move that was strongly opposed by Mexico.
Trump has also pushed other geographic renaming proposals, including a reported move concerning Lake Ontario.
It remains unclear whether Trump’s latest suggestion will lead to any formal initiative. Renaming a U.S. state would require a constitutional process and cannot be accomplished solely through a presidential order.
