The European Union has hit Russia with a new round of sanctions. This is the 16th round of sanctions imposed by the European bloc since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine three years ago.

The latest package extends restrictions on the import of aluminum from Russia. It also nearly doubles the number of vessels in Russia’s so-called “shadow fleet,” which aim to circumvent previous sanctions, bringing the total to 153.

“This new round of sanctions targets not only Russia’s shadow fleet but also those supporting the operation of unsafe oil tankers, controllers of games used to pilot drones, banks used to bypass our sanctions, and the propaganda tools used to spread lies,” said EU’s Chief Diplomat, Kaja Kallas.

“With ongoing talks to end Russia’s aggression, we must place Ukraine in the strongest possible position. Sanctions provide leverage,” she added.

Sanctions limiting trade, finance, travel, or freezing assets have been widely used by Western countries against Russia since its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
