The European Democratic Party (EDP), a prominent centrist component of the European Parliament’s Renew Europe political group, has issued a scathing condemnation of the Serbian government’s ongoing judicial crackdown following the alleged deployment of an acoustic weapon against civilian protesters in Belgrade.

The European alliance labeled the decision by Serbian state prosecutors to launch a pre-investigative probe into the victims and independent journalists as “scandalous,” accusing President Aleksandar Vučić’s administration of manipulating state institutions to orchestrate a massive political cover-up.

Inverting Perpetrators and Victims

The EDP’s sharp diplomatic intervention follows moves by the Higher Public Prosecutor’s Office (VJT) in Belgrade to interrogate human rights attorney Aleksandar Olenik, independent journalists, and student activists. The state prosecution claims that the demonstration’s organizers intentionally “simulated” the acoustic strike to compromise the government.

European Parliament (Renew Europe / EDP) Assessment:
========================================================================
The Incident --> Mass civilian protest in Belgrade; sudden panic from acoustic strike.
Symptomatology --> Protesters documented immediate nausea, severe vertigo, and headaches.
State Response --> Criminal Police Directorate (UKP) intercepts and interrogates victims.
EDP Verdict --> "Scandalous" institutional cover-up; political liability sits with Vučić.

The European Democrats firmly rejected the state’s narrative, pointing out that an abundance of video evidence and direct eyewitness testimonies validate that a weaponized acoustic device was indeed activated against peaceful crowds.

Official Statement from the European Democratic Party: ““It is absolutely scandalous: instead of identifying who ordered and deployed this banned acoustic weapon, the authorities are now actively targeting its victims. This weapon did not just fall from the sky. Someone deployed it, and someone is covering it up. Aleksandar Vučić and the responsible institutions bear a heavy political and moral liability.””

A Broader Pattern of Institutional Decay

The EDP’s communiqué placed the “sound cannon” controversy within a wider, systemic collapse of the rule of law and public accountability in Serbia.

The European lawmakers explicitly linked the current intimidation campaign to the ongoing lack of institutional accountability surrounding other recent national tragedies, including the catastrophic collapse of the concrete canopy at the Novi Sad railway station. According to the EDP, turning the judicial apparatus against injured protesters and defense attorneys highlights a dangerous breakdown of independent state organs under the current regime.

The European alliance concluded its directive by reaffirming its solidarity with civil society movements in Belgrade, stating firmly that “Serbia deserves truth and justice, not state-sponsored intimidation.” The statement signals that Belgrade’s handling of the protest aftermath will likely face intense scrutiny and political pushback within the European Parliament.
