Instagram has globally disabled end-to-end encryption (E2EE) for direct messages, significantly changing privacy protections on the platform.

Starting May 8, 2026, users will no longer be able to send ultra-private encrypted messages on Instagram. This means the company may have access to message content, including texts, photos, videos, and voice messages.

Meta Platforms had previously pledged to make E2EE the default standard across Facebook and Instagram communications, but has now decided not to proceed with full implementation on Instagram.

The decision has been welcomed by child protection organizations, which argue that full encryption can make it harder to combat online abuse and exploitation.

However, privacy advocates have criticized the move as a setback for users’ digital security and online privacy rights.

Meta stated that the feature is being removed due to low user adoption on the platform.
