EU’s top diplomat warns that Moscow is playing for time, and urges Washington not to back off peace efforts without stronger pressure.

Kaja Kallas, the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, has accused the United States of failing to use its full diplomatic and economic tools to pressure Russia, warning that Moscow’s Easter ceasefire in Ukraine was merely a stalling tactic.

“Russia didn’t respect the truce. It’s clear they are playing games to delay any real peace process,” said Kallas in an interview with AFP. “They believe time is on their side and show no genuine goodwill.”

Her remarks come after U.S. President Donald Trump threatened to withdraw from peace initiatives if there is no swift progress in talks between Moscow and Kyiv. He has expressed hope for a ceasefire agreement this week, promising a “big deal with the U.S.” for both countries if a peace deal is signed.

🔹 Key Highlights:

  • Kallas claims the 30-hour Easter truce announced by Russia was designed to prevent Trump from losing patience with the Kremlin.
  • She warns of the danger that Trump could “wash his hands” of the war, while still pursuing deals with Moscow.
  • Kallas stressed the importance of not recognizing Crimea as Russian, warning that such a move in a peace deal would be a grave mistake.
  • She emphasized: “Crimea is Ukraine. For the occupied, it means a lot that others don’t see it as Russian.”

EU Left Out, But Crucial in Sanctions

While the EU has been sidelined in the U.S.-led peace efforts, Kallas reminded Washington that Europe must be involved, especially given the sanctions architecture already in place against Russia.

“The EU should not lift any sanctions until Russia proves it is honoring a final peace agreement,” Kallas added. “We need credible proof before any steps are taken.”

Allies Meet in London

Ukrainian allies are scheduled to meet in London on Wednesday to discuss the latest U.S. proposals for ending the war. Kallas said Kyiv and its European backers are hoping for a stronger stance from Washington before any retreat from diplomatic efforts is considered.

“They have tools in their hands to pressure Russia. If they walk away without using them, then my question is: why?” Kallas concluded.
