Russia is not yet ready to begin negotiations on Ukraine, and the European Union must show strategic patience on the issue, said the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Kaja Kallas, upon arriving at the informal meeting of the EU Defence Council in Cyprus.

“Not directly. Instead, we see an escalation in their attacks,” Kallas replied when asked whether she sees Russia’s readiness to sit at the negotiating table.

“However, we are also seeing some signs within Russia indicating growing dissatisfaction with the continuation of the war. I believe Russia is not there yet. That is why we need more strategic patience.

We should not be the ones rushing into negotiations; Russia must be willing to talk to us if it truly wants to end the war. And let’s start with a ceasefire,” she emphasized.

Kallas also praised the five-point statement issued during the sidelines of the E3 leaders’ summit in London, which refers to “core European interests,” including sanctions relief and the release of frozen assets.
