The government of Kosovo has announced that procedures have begun for the creation of a special security structure, referred to as a gendarmerie force.
Acting Prime Minister Albin Kurti stated that the proposed gendarmerie would have a broad range of responsibilities related to security and coordination.
Asked by Gazeta Express about the initiative, KFOR said it is closely following the statements made by Kosovo institutions regarding the issue.
In its response, KFOR emphasized that NATO continues to cooperate with all security organizations in Kosovo and contribute to lasting security for all communities.
KFOR reiterated that, under United Nations Security Council Resolution 1244, it remains responsible for ensuring a safe and secure environment and freedom of movement throughout Kosovo.
The mission also stressed that it operates impartially and in close coordination with the Kosovo Police and EULEX in their respective security roles.
According to KFOR, NATO’s Advisory and Liaison Team (NALT) has supported the development of the Kosovo Security Force in line with its original civil protection mandate through capacity-building, education and training.
“We expect Kosovo’s security organizations to continue this cooperative approach, coordinating with KFOR to contribute to security in Kosovo and regional stability for the benefit of all communities living in Kosovo,” the statement concluded.
Meanwhile, during Kurti’s recent meeting with Kevin Hamilton, the issue of establishing a Kosovo Gendarmerie was also discussed.
According to the Office of the Prime Minister, Kurti explained the concept and emphasized the need for such a structure in strengthening security and coordination with KFOR and NATO.
