According to RFE, Kosovo’s energy sector companies have formally requested an increase in electricity tariffs, according to Ymer Fejzullahu, the head of the Energy Regulatory Office (ZRRE).

The request comes from the Transmission, System, and Market Operator (KOSTT), the Kosovo Electricity Distribution Company (KEDS), and the Kosovo Electricity Supply Company (KESCO). However, ZRRE has not disclosed the exact percentage of the proposed increase.

Currently, ZRRE is assessing the applications, after which it will publish a detailed evaluation report for public consultation. The regulatory office reviews and sets electricity tariffs annually, with new prices coming into effect on April 1 and remaining valid until March 31 of the following year.

In 2024, ZRRE reduced electricity prices for commercial and industrial consumers by 3%. However, in 2023, tariffs were increased by 15% across all consumer categories.

At present, daytime electricity prices for consumers using up to 800 kWh per month stand at 7.79 cents per kWh, while usage above 800 kWh is charged at 14.45 cents per kWh.

During off-peak hours (from 10:00 PM to 7:00 AM), the rate is 3.34 cents per kWh for consumption up to 800 kWh and 6.81 cents per kWh for usage beyond that threshold.

The potential tariff hike comes amid increasing complaints from businesses about frequent power outages affecting their operations.
