The Kosovo Police has announced the measures it has taken ahead of today’s planned protest in Skënderbeu Square in Prishtina, while also providing details about last night’s developments.
According to the police, during the previous protest, some participants threw pyrotechnic devices, fireworks and hard objects toward state buildings and police officers.
The police said that, in an effort to control the situation, it used pepper spray, tear gas and a water cannon to disperse the crowd.
Three people were arrested, according to the statement. Two were remanded in custody by order of the prosecutor, while the third was released to face proceedings under the regular procedure.
According to the police, 20 police officers sustained injuries and received medical treatment. Twelve citizens/protesters and one journalist also sought medical assistance.
The police said that, following an assessment of police actions during the protest and amid possible suspicions of excessive use of authority, the Kosovo Police Inspectorate (IPI) was notified.
Regarding today’s protest, the police announced that police units would be deployed and said temporary traffic restrictions could be imposed on roads around Skënderbeu Square, depending on the situation on the ground.
Meanwhile, the police called on protesters to express their grievances peacefully and democratically, while respecting the law and the instructions of police officers.
Today’s protest is linked to the Specialist Chambers’ judgment in The Hague against former KLA leaders and demands to amend and supplement the Law on the Specialist Chambers.
