Kosovo’s Acting President Albulena Haxhiu on Tuesday awarded the Norwegian Helsinki Committee the Presidential Medal of Merit in recognition of the organization’s longstanding contribution and support for Kosovo.

On the occasion, Haxhiu received the Norwegian Helsinki Committee’s Secretary General, Berit Nising Lindeman, and Deputy Secretary General, Gunnar M. Ekelove-Slydal.

Haxhiu said the Norwegian Helsinki Committee was among the first Western organizations to document serious human rights violations in Kosovo and bring them to the attention of the international community.

“Kosovo does not forget the friends who stood by its side during difficult periods,” Haxhiu said.

She described the award as an expression of Kosovo’s gratitude for the committee’s long-term and principled commitment to supporting Kosovo’s path toward freedom.

The Norwegian Helsinki Committee has been involved in monitoring and promoting human rights in the region for decades and has played a role in documenting violations and supporting democratic and human rights initiatives in Kosovo.
